Press Release: State of the Art, Community Arts Centre to serve South Dublin County

South Dublin County Council
Comhairle Chontae Atha Cliath Theas

South Dublin County Council’s Arts and Culture Strategic Policy Committee today unveiled plans to develop a new Community Arts Centre at Town Centre Tallaght. The Centre will be built on a site adjoining the County Library close to the proposed LUAS terminus.

The centre will be a state of the art facility which will cater for community arts needs across the county. Estimated to cost approximately €4 million it is the most significant investment in the arts in the county to date. The centre will include space for Tallaght Community Arts Centre Project as well as facilities for other arts practitioners and groups in the County such as music rehearsal space, music tuition, painting, pottery etc. The sharing of arts space among groups will enable more programmes and activities to be made available.

The Council in conjunction with local groups, organised local consultations, which resulted in a range of arts needs being identified. The SPC itself visited the Arts Centre in Lisburn to develop a clear picture of what would work for this county. These needs have been included in the new design. The plan and designs were agreed by the Strategic Policy Committee in February 2003 and their recommendations will go before the full Council on March 10th.

The Cathaoirleach of the Committee Senator Ann Ormonde M.C.C. said, “this was a very exciting new plan for community arts in the area and would give the County a much needed arts facility which would be on a par with any other such centre in the Country.”
