Third Green School for South Dublin ……… St. Colmcille’s, Senior National School, Knocklyon, raises the Green Flag.

Mayor Jim Daly, South Dublin County Council congratulates St. Colmcille’s on their success in this Environmental Award granted by An Taisce. The school was awarded the Green Flag 13th February, 2003.

Green Schools in an environmental education and action programme for Primary and Secondary Schools which aims to promote whole school action for the environment. It is a long-term sustainable programme and is in line with the principles of Local Agenda 21 (chapter 1). The award for schools that implement the programme successfully comes in the form of a Green Flag.

The Green Flag will be raised at the school in Knocklyon at 10.00 am on Friday 28th February.

Mayor Daly, Principal Mr. Paudi O Neill and the Green Schools Co-ordinator Teacher, Anne Marie O’Gara are very proud of the childrens achievement and praise their enthusiasm and dedication in the activities that have won them this Green Flag.

The school was provided with a composter and battery disposal unit and an environmental committee of school children worked on a number of environmental awareness projects. They endeavour to make the school completely environmentally friendly with recycling to the fore,projects include litter elimination, construction of bird boxes and a Green Code song……… to name but a few.

This is the third school in the South Dublin County Council area to receive this recognition and is strongly supported by the Council’s Environmental Services Staff.

St Colmcilles is the largest primary school in the County with 760 pupils and 35 Teachers.
