As part of National Play Day South Dublin County Council hosted a Free Play Day event on Sunday 2nd July at the new Natural Playground in Tymon Park.  The event coincided with the official opening of the playground by the newly elected Mayor Cllr.Paul Gogarty.  On opening the playground Mayor Gogarty spoke of the role of play in supporting healthy and happy childhoods and said that South Dublin County Council was committed to rolling out new playspaces right across the county. The aim of the National Play Day event is to help increase public awareness of the importance of play in supporting children’s physical and social development. The focus for South Dublin's Play Day event was on ‘natural play, imaginative play and getting children moving through play’.  National Play Day provides the opportunity for Local Authorities to encourage children and their families to experience play in their own locality.

There were plenty of games and activities available to suit children of all ages including trail running adventures, willow weaving, a fairy walk, gymnastics, Punch and Judy show, face painting, a pet farm and many more free activities.  “The event was designed to inspire children to use their imagination with creative elements and to get active through outdoor play “ says Alison Casserly, South Dublin’s Play Officer.

Minister Katherine Zappone also attended the event and said it was fantastic to see Tymon Park Playground open and being enjoyed on National Play Day. She pointed to the importance of playgrounds such as Tymon for the Health and wellbeing of children and families.
