South Dublin County Council would like to congratulate to all our dedicated Tidy Towns Groups throughout the County on achieving great results in the SuperValu National Tidy Towns competition announced at the Helix in Dublin today, Monday 25th September.
The Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Cllr. Paul Gogarty said “I am delighted that the Tidy Town scores in South Dublin County have continued to increase. The various committees should be congratulated on the huge effort they have put in this year as well as in previous years to keep so many parts of our county in such beautiful condition. The effort of all these volunteers in their communities represents a huge show of civic pride that has made tangible improvements to our local environment. I would like to thank all of our Tidy Town committees and the hundreds of volunteers for their fantastic contribution. I would strongly encourage others with a small amount of time on their hands to get involved in this rewarding and fulfilling work. A special mention is due to Lucan Tidy Towns, from my own electoral area, who this year won a Bronze Medal. I know first-hand the work this group does and I am delighted their efforts have paid off and are recognised in this competition.
Kevin O’Loughlin from Lucan Tidy Towns Committee (Winners of a Bronze Medal this year) who attended the ceremony added “Lucan Tidy Towns has been "on the go" for well over 20 years. It started just as most groups do by a few well-meaning and motivated citizens coming together to improve their local environment. Over the years the Tidy Towns competition has evolved from being about removing litter and planting flowers and shrubs to looking after architectural heritage, conservation and waste reduction, among other things. Planning ahead and involving schools, organisations and businesses and of course South Dublin County Council are now vital to make a difference. Every little bit the community does can add on those few extra marks in the competition that we all want to see year on year. It can be difficult sometimes to get motivated when we are faced with the work we have to do to get in our entry form and put on a good show for the Tidy Towns adjudicators. But when we're out on a Saturday working with our friends we get a great buzz when we've made even a small improvement in our village. So we feel it’s well worth it!’
This year, South Dublin County Council are proud to have worked in partnership with Lucan, Clondalkin, Newcastle, Woodstown Village, Templeogue, Palmerstown, Brittas and Ballyboden Committees who work tirelessly to improve their environments, and take pride in their communities.
South Dublin County Council are committed to working in partnership with all our existing committees, and are delighted to announce that we have two new committees based in Saggart and Rathfarnham who are preparing to enter Tidy Towns 2018.
